Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Although innovations have been made in the way we treat sexually transmitted infections and how we prevent them from occurring in recent years, they are still a problem. As many as half a million new cases have been reported in the UK on an annual basis in recent years. Many experts don’t put this down to new strands of illnesses, but rather to the fact that more young people are going out and socialising and having sex. But while attitudes towards sex have relaxed, many people do not take the precautions they should.

Common STIs are conditions such as gonorrhoea and chlamydia. These are typically transmitted through sexual fluids, such as semen or vaginal fluids. Symptoms may include pain during urination, as well as penile or vaginal discharge, amongst others. However, these symptoms may not be visibly apparent in some sufferers. In fact, many people who suffer with these conditions may display no visible symptoms whatsoever. But this doesn’t mean that the disease is not active, and cannot be passed onto someone else. Those who know or suspect they may have come into with the condition should seek treatment immediately, and inform those sexual partners who they may have passed the condition on to as well.
