What are the benefits?
Norethisterone is primarily taken to delay the onset of a woman’s menstrual period. Norethisterone is a synthetic hormone similar to the naturally occurring sex hormone, progesterone.
How does this treatment work?
Progesterone helps to facilitate the development of a healthy womb lining, known as the endometrium, which is necessary for pregnancy. If a fertilized egg does not attach itself to the lining of the womb by the end of the menstrual cycle a woman’s progesterone levels drop and the lining is shed. However, if a fertilized egg does attach to the lining progesterone levels stay high to ensure that the lining stays in place. By mimicking the effects of a woman’s natural progesterone, norethisterone helps to regulate the healthy growth and subsequent shedding of the endometrium.
How do you use it?
When taken towards the end of the menstrual cycle this medication tricks the body into thinking that it is pregnant by raising progesterone levels, preventing the shedding of the womb lining and delaying the onset of the menstrual period.
Depending on when in the menstrual cycle Norethisterone is taken it may be used in the treatment of menstrual disorders such as irregular or painful menstrual periods, premenstrual syndrome, and endometriosis.
